isn't a two pronged switch for 'on and off' whereas a three pronged switch is for either 'a or b'? leave one prong alone for an 'on and off' switch?

the extra prong on your current switch is an earth, and so probably means that the switch itself lights up when the circuit is on (am i right)
the new switch which is 2 wires will not light up, and so all it needs is 2 of the wires, no earth
