Smaller engine come up, bigger engines go down.

My ickle x10xe came out uphill but the 20xe was easier to drop the car over it.

You could probably drop a 1.6 down from above but you would have to clear more stuff ut of the way than if you came from underneath.

like the batterey and stuff?
with the g/box attached?

droping it in from the top seems easier to me as long as it will clear everything with the gear box attached
and taking the old engine out upwards aswell

Yeah, battery and tray mainly. If you were swapping like for like it would be easier from underneath but in your case you will be taking most stuff out with the engine anyway.

take the engine out from the top and leave the gearbox in.put a jack under the gearbox so it doesnt drop and this will make it easier to get the engine out.be careful of the brake master cylinder and take the radiator out just so you dont bash it with the engine

a 1.6 wont come out from the top with the gearbox attached, i found it very very difficult to get my engine out through the top on its own, so its drop, and take the engine out that way im afraid

i took out my GSI engine 3 months ago, vomes out the bottom, all vauxhall corsa engines should do, ya need 600mm clear clearance under the car to slide it out easily, i only had about 500mm but tiped engine on its side
