I'm really surprised to see so many people say Jasper Carrott, I didn't think he'd be that popular. He's one of my favourites though.

Peter Kay is quailty for observational stuff, Billy Conolly's good, Morecambe and Wise were brilliant, the Monty Python crew etc

Johnny Vegas is class though, mainly because he just does everything off the cuff, when he sets off on a rant about something its just brilliant. He was on Room 101 talking about internet chatrooms and had me crying laughing.

Still amazed your having a conversation about comedians without anyone mentioning bill hicks----American comeedian of late eighties/early nineties,,tragically died of a heart attack in his 40's.......absolutely brilliant, very similar style to michael moore.....you can get videos from hmv. Get "one night stand"...widely regarded amoungst modern comedians as the greatest piece of stand up ever....Ask any comedian who who there fav is and you will always hear hicks mentioned
