if you just want to clean it try removing the plastic pipe that comes from the airfilter.if you look into the throttle body, just before the butterfly there is a hole located on the lower part of the body(the only hole anyway).Try spraying it with carb cleaner spray, first with the engine off and then with the engine on,whele playing with the gas pedal a bit

that is totally not possible on a GSI, the upper inlet manifold will have to come off probably and ya carnt run the car like that!!!!, only way is to remove the valve, get a mantzel power box it brings the throttle body right up ontop of the engine, to remove the idle control valve takes like 2 minutes

piece of piss to take the icv off!
even i can do it!
take the header tank off with a a rachet and a 10 mm socket disconnectthe 2 top pipes first and the bottom pipe when the header tank is loose.
then disconnect the 2 fuel lines (i used adjustable, approx 15mm spanner u need)
then that gives ya enough space to get the bottom torx bit out, the top one is a piece of piss!
then gently guide the icv out
jobs a good un!
