the XIX was primarily a reconnaisance plane for RAF, and used huge drop tanks to get it mega high and be able to fly further than any other fighter/recon plane of the time. Could hit 450mph flat out.

A spitfire flying overhead is nothing compared to an Avro Vulcan bomber flying overhead......four Rolls Royce Olympus 301 engines, 20,000 lbs of thrust each:
I remember going to an airshow when I was about 7 or 8, and watching one of those flying overhead......bloody hell, it was loud compared to everything else.

concorde taking off is a lovely sound too, but i will probably never hear it again Its so hard to explain to people the sound of jet engines close up, if they have never experienced it for themselves. I miss going to farnborough/fairford.

Concorde was the most awesome flight i went on, EVER. Went to paris and me and my grandad sat in the jumpseat behind the pilot on both take-off and landing. My grandad was chief technical engineer at british aerospace hatfield before he retired. I must admit, the most impressive aircraft i ever seen is the avro vulcan. It was at british aerospace airshow and i swear to god i never seen such an awesome sight. Nearly as big as concorde, louder, and be able to pull a near vertical climb immediately after take off. So much power it makes you do sex wee. Definately the best of british.

Im a bit of an old skol plane addict. Gimme a B17 flying fortress or a lancaster over a vulcan
Allthough vulan is the size of my street
Amazing feat of engineering
