use a sheet of a4 paper to get a perfectly smooth finish, remember to laquer in the warm too!

Yup make sure can is warm, dont be a tool an heat it with a flame, just room temp or slightly above and dont let it dry in the cold, i put mine in the airing cupboard, this was exactly my mums facial expression:
