look in the header bottle you should see the water circulating around the system, from what i can read of your post`s check you fan fuse, you say it gets hot but does the fan come in?? remove the fan switch and bridge the 2 wires in the connection with the ignision on the fan should switch on, does it? is your dash temp gauge working???

the fan was not working no, i have put a temporary measure in to solve this.
however that is not the problem. having no fan is not a cause to overheat

are the water pipes ahrd? id check the switch for startors, can ou see water circulation in the header bottle?

just taken the thermostat out (wasnt that hard) and checked it in a pan of boiling water, it appeared to open just before boiling so i guess its not that that is the cause.
once again i dont know where to go from here. need to get a new thermostat housing gasket so might aswll get a new thermostat whilst im at it

get a new thermosat, fan switch and water pump.
if that doesnt solve it you radiator is fucked.

thermostat is about 7 quid, fan switch is about 20 and so is the water pump.
best of changing one thing a time starting with the cheapest ones.
probably the thermostat i would think though.

i just went to halfords and tehy didnt have a thermostat and vaux was closed so gonna have to put it back for now. might try again next weekend but i dont need the car anymore after this so effort might be lacking

put it back, left it, and it leaked thermostat had moved in teh houseing which was evidant when i took it off. rushed putting it in again, half finished before england vs france

Bonzai how did you wire your fan up to a switch so you can have it on when you want? my car cuts out b4 the fan kicks in due to overheating this wud be a nice little thing to have....
