could have damaged the PSU so it isn't providing power to the motherboard. Or more worse the motherboard is fried. I had this happen once. Had to have new motherboard and cpu.
just do what modded_corsa suggested and stick it in your pc to recover any files required
now i surge protect my power supply and phone line cos i have had endless modems packin in thunder storms as well

If the power surge hit the PSU it's likely that the PSU is fried, along with the motherboard. Nasty.

take your case off......and there should ... (if your only running 1 or 2 hard drives of your on) ....be a few wires ith a white connector coming out of the power supply......then plug that into your hard-drive.....then look for a grey cable...its flat....with a black connector on the end...it will more than likely llreay be pluggged into your other hrd-drive.....but it has more than one connector on it
so plug that into your hard-rive.....with the red line(on the grey cable)...so that the red stripe...i next to wer the poer connector plugged in
then turn your pc on....and.....copoy files

Learn from this too, a power surge protector costs about £15, get one of those for the future

no mate, ur system is running one Hard Drive (with floppy above it).
Trace the grey IDE connector coming from the HD and see if there is another one plugged into the motherboard which is free?
If so (SWITCH OF PC FROM MAINS), then slot the Hard Drive from your old dears machine into a spare slot (below the HD will be fine) and plug the IDE cable in and power cable.
Switch power back on and boot up Then copy everything from the new drive to yours to make a backup of it (would be something like E drive, if you have a CDrom etc)

Normally, you can connect 4 IDE devices up, so one of those devices you've got plugged in will have a "spare" IDE-connector on it......plug that into the drive (making sure that the dip-switches are set on the drive to how you're plugging it in - primary master, primary slave, secondary master, secondary slave), plug a spare power-molex into the drive, and power the machine up...

Buy some, then! Better safe than sorry!
And Greg, the IDE connections there would be Hard-Drive, DVD-Rom, and CD-RW......although it looks similar, the floppy-drive isn't the same connection as for the others (slightly smaller ribbon-cable connector).
