Does my motherboard have to be SATA compatable to run SATA drives?

I built this machine way before the SATA craze, but wanna know if running a SATA drive is dependent on motherboard compatability.

oh and does SATA have any performance gains against the normal ide interface?

Usually yes, they require a specific data transfer cable for one thing, not the usual IDE jobby.

SATA is quicker

Yes (S-ATA connectors rather than IDE, although most motherboards come with both).

tbh there are no real 'noticeable' differences regarding ATA-133 & SATA drives within windows.

You can get a PCI SATA Controller if your motherboard doesn't support SATA

I'd advise getting an SATA Controller/Board which supports RAID-0 though & then use 2 hard-disks in RAID-0 configuration - that WILL be faster!!

how much is it gonna cost,
one of these SATA controllers with RAID-0 compatability?

i have a SATA set uo on my mobo and HD... HD

tis is meant to be faster with regards to data transfer.

and as sed above... u can buy SATA PCI cards and connected a SATA HD to the card therefore u dont need to buy a new moto that has a built in SATA

the controllers are about £13 - £20 depending on the brand
