Just a wild guess, could it be bits from the inside of the cat? I've never taken one apart so don't know whether that's possible.

Ive been thinking along the lines of the cat, but cant work out how it woud get to the top of the engine  I'm having a custom made de-cat pipe on sat so I will ask the fitter if he knows what it is or if it is a bit of the cat.

ok folks nothin can come back up the exhaust unless it can fly and defy gravity it will be the mesh from the air flow meter am sorry but had to laugh at some of they replies

how big is this sensor meter? The bits were a good 1cm x 2cm and theres no holes in it.

The mesh on my air flow meter doesn't look anything like this; it's wire mesh, not corrugated aluminum. I agree I can't imagine how it could get from the cat or silencer to where it was found though! It's also hard to imagine that a garage would deliberately put it in to get more money, although not impossible I suppose. Could you construct the stuff in the photo from the air mass mesh? I can't see it myself.

something that size cant have come through the engine as would have fucked the valves so its from the exhaust header to the erg valve or like suggested been put in there from fitting or a piece of the packaging

It's way too big to have come from anywhere, and there is nothing like it in the engine at all!!! What's between the exhaust header and the EGR?
