ok.

512kb/s = (about) 40 - 60 kb/s download speed
1mb/s = (about) 70 - 120 kb/s download speed
2mb/s = (about) 250kb - 1mb/s download speed.

how come such a great increase form 1mb to 2mb.??

512k gives a max of 64kb/s
1mbit gives a max of 128k/s
2mbit gives a max of 256k/s

Infact real speeds are slightly lower due to the overheads of TCP/IP...

Where's the great increase?

But 2mb/sec doesn't get 1mb/sec downloads.

and also the figures between for example 512 and 64 relate to the bit/byte words - divide 512 by 8 and what do you get?

Because haven't NTL just upgraded all 600K modems to 750K like blueyonder have? That would give a max speed of 93k/s...

should be able to get full speed from quite a few places modded_corsa, I frequently max out on sites such as ftp.uk.freebsd.org and .ac.uk's.

got NTL her and on the 600k service i can get anything from 65ks to 80 odd k's...with the odd 120k popping up every so often

And yes, NTL will upgrading the speed of their services during this summer, although telewest (BY) still get the best deal - 50 quid for a 2meg service and you get 50% extra...so 3mb line for 50....bargin
