are these called popups?

I've just installed xp and a complete newb to it. So far i hate it, might re install win2000. I never used to get these windows before.

Also another thing, how do you extend the quick launch bar on xp? It will only show 3 programs.

Cheers

Whats more, make sure you get pretty much every critical update from windowsupdate.com - XP is vulnerable to being entered illegally (aren't we all) and for once, the MS updates help.

XPSP2 has so far had about a dozen security holes discovered.

one where an image file downloaded can contain code which executes upon reboot, and also ways to bypass the new security 'patches/features' in IE which prevent code executing on websites without you knowing it...

Also the new code-execution prevention thing can easily be bypassed with any of the above holes are exploited

To sort the quick launch right click on the taskbar and make sure locked isn't ticked. Then you'll be able to make it as big as you want.

make sure you disable the messenger service not just stop it, cos it will be active again next time you reboot.
