If I were to colour code my roof rails with paint from halfords, what would be the chance of getting a good colour match? what preperation do I need to do before spraying them?

loads of prep mate. ideally you would need to take them off, if not then mask everythin, as overspray gets everywhere.
you would need to sand them, plastic prime them, colour them, laquer them. but remember the laquer you get in cans is total shite. also if painting with cans, get them to make it in the shop, in bigger cans, sometimes the colour match aint too good.
as for obtaining a decent colour match, it should be ok. make sure you put plenty on.
put too little on and the colour wont be right, but once its up to colour, it wont change, no matter how many coats you put on.

roofrails are a bitch to do, the paint comes off after a while if you dont use primer with a chamical etcher in it or so i have been told
If you want a decent job get a bodyshop to do it shouldnt be too costly.

yea you have to use etch primer ideally, it kind of bites into the material

not much, but it was done with my interior plastics.
Think i paid about £40 for the rails and the interior door plastics to be done.
