how do you know its not head gasket? Cream under the filler cap is one of many signs of headgasket gone, but not always present.
And as stated unless you put it in there if its water its from the headgasket.

the head gasket went, so i changed it. at the same time i pulled the sump off to put a set of arp rod bolts in and gave the sump a thorough cleaning.
it hasnt come from the head gasket

The engine is currently in bits again as its dropped a couple of valves, but this would not cause the water to mix with oil.
Doesnt matter really anyway as this engine if fucked and im either going to rebuild it in my spare time or just bin it.
just puzzled me abit, thats all

gets used on the track a fair bit so certain things tend to wear out quicker than usual

adam, its mearly condensation forming in the sump over time. Wouldnt worry about it, just go and give it a long hard drive to warm it right up and should cure any problems.

If it was water you would know about it. The oil would be grey rather than black.
Surely you drained it into a container so can check it?
I would be very worried if I got so much condensation in my sump that you could see if flow!

i have come across engines where by the oil comes out as normal (in respect to colour and consisteny) but would be preceded by a clear much faster flowing liquid!
That much condensation isnt going to form in the sump!
