Usually batteries have more than two connections because they're 'smart' batteries.

Three pin batteries are usually a one-wire bus which communicates with a chip in the battery which tells the charger the chemistry of the battery so it can apply the correct charging algorithm.

Also allows the phone to monitor the state of health of the battery. This used to be easy as the voltage drops as the battery is run down. The only trouble is the newer Li-Ion batteries hold their voltage right up until their dying days, and so the phone needs a sensor in the battery to tell it how much charge is left..

geek

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

All i know is that if you put your tounge on a PP 9V battery it tingles, so having 3 it might give off a dam good belt.
