I was thinking of getting a garage to do the service on my Astra but I'm thinking of just buying trolley jack/axle stands from Halfords, buying the bits from Vauxhall (TC price of course) and doing it myself one weekend when it's not pissing down with rain...

Unfortunately I lack the tools and area suitable to do such jobs

Well obviously I can buy the tools but I don't have anywhere to do the work, hence I have to entrust my vehicle in the "care" of a garage...

Depends how busy I am and what the weather is like. I've changed a gearbox and two clutches on a mercedes and an RX7, so i'm pretty much ok with most things.

depends what it is and what time of year it is.
no garage, so in winter it's w/e's or nothing, and if it wants doing quickly, it's easier to give it to a garage.

also certain things are just easier done on a ramp. no point busting a gut rolling around the floor under the car when it's a small job and a garage will have it done while you wait up on the lift.
