my koni's aren't too hard really, they don't bottom out either. had them all on softest setting and had turned the front up one notch and its still alright.
steering rack is what worries me, can feel it shake over bumps and the wheels turn a bit, but doesn't seem to feed back thru steering, so seems deadly

Worn rack that mate OR could be nackered bushes/topmounts etc. When I swapped to alloy topmounts it made a MASSIVE difference in road holing over bumps, also have the oversized coilovers so they are extremely stiff laterally.
The adjusters on front suspension dampers dont adjust bump, they adjust rebound (unless you have £1K worth of track coilover) so turning the knob will not effect how hard/easy it is for suspension to compress - its the spring that does that.

when car is stationary and i turn wheel left and right about 15-20 degrees in each direction i get a loud knocking/clunk noise? is this the rack?
is bad handling over bumps and ruts in the road,
