I think I remember that. That was when Max Poop was actually a good magazine. Those days have all but faded into existence now.

Was just about to say the exact same thing
I remember MAX METAL like it was yesterday, with the guy who's now the editor of Total vauxhall as the ice editor (proby?) jon walsh.
It used to have soooo many good cars, not just all foreign rubbish and pykie sheds.
Bring back the old days

Indeed, it was John Walsh, although he did the letters pages as well (dressed up as a monk).
I have the second edition up in the roof I think. Inside there is a Santa Pod thrash with some crazy cars in it. 4x4 Astra Turbo. MK3 Fiesta with a RWD XE in it. Other cool stuff like that.
They started going downhill after they did this......
On a lighter note though, 3-spokes are out of favour these days, but back then they were cutting edge. 17`s too, which was a rarity. The first ALLOY SPOILER IN THE FECKIN' WORLD fitted to a road car!!! Something that F&F didn't start! Still looks gash though as do a lot of the 'all show, no go' cars that are featured today. Although 'Project Thunder' did have a fair amount of work done by Courtenay iirc.
Back in the gool`ol days of Max Power before it went completely tits-up, they used to feature cars they would build up over several months, showing its progress, using it to test stuff etc. Then they would give the cars away in a competition. They also used to supply a years insurance for the winner so they could keep the car rather than have to sell it right away. They did this with Project Thunder. The winner was some oik who parked it upside down in a shop window on his high-street causing a huuuuuge insurance claim. The magazines insurers said they would no longer cover competition winners after this payout so that ended Max giving away project cars.

Oh dear I remember what you said the write ups on how they did the project cars was so interesting, but saying that i was only a kid at the time probably 11-12-13 something like that.
Project XS was one i remember THe issue where they gave that hideous carlton away was probably the 4th issue i got from maxxy poo! First one i got was september 1994 and its had a mk2 escort and a rear engined mini IIRC that was mint green came with free stickers and poster fo project XS
Used to be kool back then. I only buy total vauxhall now, even redline which used to stray from all the boobs out and stick on tat crap has gone just as lifeless and awfull as the rest.

Yeah the MK2 Escort was Project kicker wasn't it? They butchered an ultra rare MK2 Escort Harrier. They did a nice job on that though, even though they defaced a classic.
