I'm gettin a 'free' engine soon enough (same as I have already), and gona be doin a complete re-build on it...

Lookin at doing the headwork myself, and found this guide...

http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.shtm

reckon its something which I could do myself, if I take time & effort to do it properly with the right tools?

Also, what would be the best thing to 'clean' it with, or bath it in?

Cheers

Assuming your getting it skimmed get it cleaned after the porting whilst at a machine shop being skimmed.

My mate did mine with a dremel and the sand paper like cartridge rolls. Just be careful, mark out the manifold faces against the gasket so you dont go too big, and make sure you take even amounts out of each area.

If in doubt take less out rather than more, and be aware that there is a art behind it....

For cleaning use any solvent eg carb cleaner or if you want to put it in a bath of cleaner then brake cleaner in a big tin but make sure its a solvent.
As for head work one of he main bits is smoothing out the point where the valve seat meets the head
