The c20xe when the astra gsi first came out would have been 12k ish give or take inflation and what ££ was worth then, which isnt far off the price for a clio or 206,
Engines have come on a considerable amount,
the vtec, vvti al just a few new concepts that are 90% failure free,
As j1400 said race engines are where its at, each year the governing bodies say a limit of bhp to make classes more competitive and restrict the size of the induction pipe.
f3's for example, the induction hole isnt much larger than a 50p, but its what happens when the air goes past that, they have cylindrical cut pipes that force the air into the inlet faster.
Its endless the things they do and still come up with more power each year!

Emissions basically
still increasing performance, but limited by emissions

Using a slieved ali block is hardly cutting edge over a nice never die cast iron block anyways.
It's really the materials used that makes an engine more technologically advanced than another, it's now about all the electronic gubbins attached to the engine that make it special.

yes the c20xe was 150bhp but it also produced loads of emissions. They intorduced ecotec to cut emissions, and the bhp went down to 125ish iirc. So the advancement has been huge considdering each time a new engine comes out there are lower emissions regualtions they muct meet.

Well the honds F20C engine (s2000 power unit) musters 240BHP and still is in line with current emissions.
so vauahlls effort is more to do with provide a cheap to build engine that's reliable and givesa good drive, power figures arent' all that make a good engine.
