what would change if i changed my standard exhaust pipe with a larger bored pipe?

i was planning on changing mine and my mates middle silencer with a pipe, however people on this site said it isnt a good idea because it may cause rasping.
i dont want any rasping so i was wondering what differance changing the bore size will make, with and without a middle silencer.
