What should i replace to do a quick/mini rebuild of my X14XE engine, its very loud under normal driving and i think i have an air leak on the inlet manifold as it ticks alot under acceleration?

head off strip clean rebuild, top end gasket set.

If an X14XE uses a lot of oil (but not stupid amounts), would the valve stem oil seals be at fault and not piston rings?

compression test Sam.
dry test then wet. should give you an idea

try and borrow a tester. think they are only £15-20 anyway.

failing that take it to any mechanics.
probably be an hours (charged not worked) labour. £30-40 ?

i'll find a guide for you if you do it yourself.

this goes well in depth.
there's easier instructions on the back of tester packaging, but this is a good guide of how to interpret results.

What would i have to change on my engine to make it a 1.6 without changing the engine?

engine would have to come out anyway.
may aswell just get a 1.6 lump.

If you remove the cylinder head yourself, an engineering company will do a basic restoration on it for around £250-300. Won't include that much, they'll bath it, get rid of all deposits, change oil seals, maybe skim it...

its frustrating now! its all done, everythings in, all wired up....but tried to start it and the motor won't even turn over and when i just turn on the ignition there's no EM light on the dash??

new head, going away for a fettle this weekend, then rebuild bottom end. gona pocket pistons and fit arp bolts in prep for cams and throttle bodies when i get some money in the future
