A friend of mine wants to wire up a red l.e.d so it looks like he has an alarm!
I told him to just get an alarm but he refuses!
Does anyone know where it could be wired from and how to do it?

If he gets a red flashing led just wire the live wire to a permanent live and the negative wire to an ignition live,
I have been told that when the ignition is off it becomes an earth therefore the LED will only work whilst the ignition is turned off

The method mentioned by Rikki will work on your mates car.
If you test the ignition wire, it will show -ve when the ignition is turned off.

That is correct... the diagram will not show any direct earth connections to the ignition circuit, as this would obviously cause a short when +12v is applied (i.e. ignition turned on).
The "earth" that the LED see's, is an in-direct earth, via the ignition circuit's components.

If that was true then you would deffo get a short when the ignition was turned on!
Also if the switched ignition wires shows 0v with respect to ground it dosent mean its earthed, could be either earthed or open circuit.

Rob it does work, go try it for yourself.
Most of the components the ignition lives go to switch back to a very very minor earth when they have no lives going to them.
It does work.

You don't need to remove your sterring shroud.. you should find that there's an ignition live in the cigarette lighter socket - test that!
