It doesnt really matter. Bass is non-directional so you can position them anyway.

You will get a better base RESPONCE by facing the sub at the boot hatch.

Ive read it on talk audio, from some people who know what they are doing on there Makes the bass more punchy as the air moving in the space of the boot has limited travel distance.

Subs are best directed towards the boot hatch as low frequency sound waves are longer and therefore have further to travel to front of car.. Best way to test is if there is more bass when boot is open the box is facing the wrong way, should be less bass when tailgate open..

yea, as it needs a box of a specific volume to perform correctly. Unless you use a free air sub, but I think that is big money.
also, the shelf is guaranteed to vibrate over bumps unless the shelf is screwed down, which wont work too well in the plastic sides.

my subs are behind the front seats and they are pointing upwards and to the rear, open the boot and it sounds rubbish, but sat in the car it sounds really good, if I have the window open it doesnt make much difference, but if you are outside the car you cannot hear too much bass until you put your head in through the window.

false, positioning/angles does matter, all dependant on the space is looking into etc

my mate who does audio for a living learnt this on a course with axis distribution not long ago

so it does matter
