In a new house we are building at the moment, every room will have an Ethernet port in the wall to connect up to the home network. Ive currently only got a 5port router so will be purchasing a switch to get more hosts.

Does the router just connect to the uplink port on the switch and everyone plugs into the switch?

Depends upon the hardware. You may require a cross over cable.

Yeah pretty much although as Paul says the choice of cable depends on the socket you're plugging in to on the switch. Some you can choose, in which case either cable and the right position on the switch will be fine.

Do i need to look for something specific when i buy the switch though or will any do the trick. Some look like simple hubs for simple home networks without a modem/router

Yeah thats what you need, even a basic hub would do the job although a switch will be quicker if there's a lot of traffic going between the computers. Can't be listened in on either.

The Netgear stuff is cheap, PC World have 8 port for 23 quid, use the link in Geek Shop thread and search for FS608UK.
