You need to pay what they want.
You crashed into them.
Either that or go through insurance.
Bumpers aren't cheap though and including painting that and other bits from somewhere reputable that is probably an ok quote.
Just seen it doens't need painting.
But still, nissan would easily charge that.

add up how much it would cost going through insurance, even with the raised premium.

yep that sounds about right!
bumper is roughly £260 a teaxtured one from nissan, i ordered an unpainted one the other day and that was £200, new arch is about £40 plus painting of about £50 and they may need to blend so its all about right!
and you need to pay what they ask unless you go through insurance!

How do you know it's bollocks when you don't know what's involved in crash repair.

no offence but if someone crashed into me i would not be giving them my car to fix no matter what they paid me, remember your the guilty party you have no grounds to start making deals

also if i do decide to do it privately instead of me paying him to pay them (because he might not even do it at all), i may pay the garage on completion

Just ask him to get 2 quotes from non fanchise body repairer & to let you see the quotes. Your either going to have to pay cash or go through insurance. No way will he let you get the bits & put it together up your drive
