I wouldn't say UMD was trying to take over ipod etc at all. Consoles have always had their own format, agreed they might of hoped that it would become a medium for other portable players.
As for PS3 being expensive, theres quite a lot sold to adults as well as kids and they won't stay £400 for long. I paid £270 for my PS2 which came down to £200 a few months later.

psp was marketed as a portable media device; which is what ipod is.
which seems to me like they were trying to take a piece of ipods market share.

IMO the psp was never trying to take over the ipod.
I don't think you could even buy music on umd.
It was a failure yes but i woudln't even compare it to dvd/hd-dvd/bluray.

i dont see it as a betamax vhs battle, i see them as 2 seperate formats that you'll be able to buy the same movies on for the same price.
there should however be some sort of media sandard.

It won't be 215 here.
We were never getting any version of it that cost anywhere close to 270 quid in the 1st place.
