Hi, i was just wondering, someone from my college was recently in a crash whilst racing one of his friends, now his friend has had his car taken by the police to see if he was racing at the time of the crash, i was just wondering how they will tell this? does an ECU store data like this, or will they look at other things?

some ecus do mainly top end cars like porsches, things like corsas dont lol

Its not all top end cars steve.
I'm not sure about here but a lot of cars in america had enough data logging to show how fast car was going and if brakes were applied etc before a crash and the manufacturers didn't bother telling anybody.

i cant think of any popular main stream hatchback that would have an ecu that stores this data

What does vagcom show you on your car?
It wouldn't take much to store a few seconds or even 30 seconds before anything flagged as a crash.

As I said though, i'm not sure about cars here.

I definitely read about it happening in america though.

It's not the car that crashed that has been taken away, that's a write-off. It's the lad who was racing the guy that crashed that's had his car taken off him now.

Replacement ECU's do data logging , as steve said only topend cars might.

All ECU's store are fault codes
BUT some can store impact speed, as anyone remember the Escort pics where it was rapped around a tree and it stored the bloke was going 110mph

Clio V6 stored information on the ECU as I was lead to believe. Something about them checking to see whether or not it had been ragged in the first few hundred miles, but that was probably cobblers

it tells you all sorts, sensors, fault codes, speed, revs etc, but none of this data is stored

McLaren F1's do. A guy who went on placement at McLaren told me that an F1 that was out in Germany that came back over for service was driven a 200mph every day of it's life
