Want to do quite a lot of painting on the car.

Have done loads with rattle cans and think I have got pretty good at it

So I would now like to buy myself a compressor and gun.

I don't want to spend much as I am not going to be spraying the full car etc , just panels such as tailgate and bonnet.

I'd also like to know what sort of paint I am looking for and how it is mixed etc...

Cheers

it take professional painters years to serve their apprenticeship. 4 years in this country. At that a good spray painter is hard to come accross. plenty of average painters around. id honestly leave it to the pros. altho ifu really want to id say tom on here who works in eds garage would be a good person to ask

I can respect that but never asked with it in mind that I would leave it to the pros.

That was the job I did on my tailgate using rattle cans only. Thats whats "inspired" me if you like to get into using a compressor and gun and doing it properly.

Like I said Im not wanting to do big stuff that the pros do but its proven on this site that it can be done

etc etc. The finish on the mirrors is straight out of the gun, bumper is after flatting/buffing up. You'll find it much easier to get decent results straight from the gun than with cans, so it's well worth a go. As always, don't skimp on prep, and enjoy yourself

gun was a present, but about £50 should get you something similar I think, compressor was a bargain, ex display in machine mart's cheapo corner, think it was £80 down from £130 or something.

Mask was a fiver (clearance from Homebase with filters).

Engine's back together, need to clamp up exhaust and fill coolant, then it's ready to start up!

You need a water filter too, you can get them on eBay for about £15 and they will do the job for small things...

I use cellulose, so you need it thinned right down. When I did my mirrors it was probably 60-70% thinners to paint.

And also have any of you used this site - http://www.carpaint.co.uk/automotive_paint.htm

It says they sell you the paint in single pack form ?

I take it this means it is already mixed ?

A good idea ?

Try looking for a second hand gun over a new low quality one? Devillbiss ones go on ebay for a decent price. Sata ones go for a little bit more

There is a Devillbis GTi for sale at the moment, it's £60 with no bids, but there are two days left. If you go down that route then make sure you get the GTi and not the SRi as the SRi is for things like smart repairs rather than normal painting....

That depends on what kind of paint it is. Seems quite decent prices though. I would say you are better off going to a Motor Factors like Brown Brothers if you have one close by as they have helped me out in the past to get the right stuff....

I'm not sure, it seems very small, but Ash has a similar one which he is happy with so going by that you should be able to get away with it.

youll need 8cfm compressor for a good job of painting at home.

as for spray guns your looking at anything £60 and up that you can adjust as you spray (cheap ones cant be played with for spray pattern)

bearing in mind if your spraying your car and not doing it all youll need 2pac or itll look crap. celly paint is easier to use and less lethal on your lungs!
