Right, i've wanted to apply for the Police for a long time, and Devon and Cornwall Police were the force that I was going to try and join, as its where i've lived for the last five years.
However, the application is about 14 months, start to finish. I've noticed that Essex Police are doing the whole process in about 6 months start to finish. Problem is, i'm not from Essex and have no connections with the area and so it would mean a new start again, if I managed to get in.
What would you lot do? Apply for somewhere which will take far longer (and is harder to get into), but is local to you, or apply for the one where it will take less time to get in, is apparently easier, but is a new start?

Can you transfer once youve passed?
How long does it take to pass?
Essex is alright, and just next to London, which is nice

You can transfer yeah, but I think you have to be there for 2 years - after which, I might like Essex more than Plymouth.

New start 
I did it with P+D at college, could have gone to a local college but start at 16+ level, but instead I travel 25 miles a day to learn at my age level

Ermmm, my mate lives in Bedfordshire so would naturally join the Bedfordshire Constabulary but wasn't allowed, he had to join Hertfordshire instead.
As far as I know, you aren't allowed to join the area police where you live - I could be wrong though.
You will get paid for the application process once you get passed a certain stage though, surely?

Same situation for me, more police positions avail in Wiltshire rather than Gwent
I am going to wait for gwent, as dont want to transfer. But if you are desperate to get in then go for the one furthur away

Wouldn't get paid until you'd started training really. Also, you can join where you live, as I know a few people that have.

You can work for what ever force you like and live where you like!
Join the Specials mate....great "stepping" stone if you like
Get to do everything the Regular force do except you are voluntary...may be their application procedure for Specials is a lot shorter than regs?
Keep your original job, work as a special....put in your appln for the regulars....voila 14 months will pass in no time AND you will be gathering vital experience!

Thing is, I hate my current job. I only planned on staying until I finished uni, and could apply for the Police properly. Specials isn't really an option either, as i'm quite busy with work and so wouldn't have the time to be effectively doing two jobs

Specials and CSO's, application is similar to the Police one, would be a great stepping stone
Plus with the specials you are volunteering, which shows how keen you are when it comes to applying for a fully fledged police position

Yeah, I don't disagree that it would be a good stepping stone, but i've literally not got the time, without cutting down my hours of my normal job, which I can't afford to do. I've failed PCSO selection within the last two months anyway, (was my first ever proper job interview  ), so I can't apply for the PCSOs for the moment anyway. Not sure what the score is with Specials,
