Hi guys, what im looking to do is get a very good finish on my car using
rattle cans, ive sprayed a few sets of wheels satin black and gloss black
however gloss black always seem to come out very mottled, and the paint
is never smooth

Now the process i used to do,,, was clean with soap and water, sand down with
400 grit and then 800 grit, wash again and dry, then put on about 3 coats of laquer
then i put on the spray paint, do i need to sand down the primer at all ?
If i do do i need too use wet sand paper or dry ? and do i wash it off after or just wipe it off

Same for the paint after ive applied this do i simply apply laquer or should i sand it down?
Again using wet or dry and do i wash off ? wipe off ?

A step guide for getting a smooth an non mottled finish would be great

The main thing i get stuck on is the sanding(flatting) of primer/paint

Thank You Rob.

Sand between every layer of primer with 1200 grit wet to achieve a smoother surface everytime, washing the wheel and drying it for the next coat after every sand. Once its sufficiently primed and completely smoothed from the fine grade wet sanding you should start applying your paint. Use quite thin coats to get the colour laid down and built up to begin with. Once this is done you can apply your finishing coats of paint not too thick though as you don't want to sand runs out of it. After the last coat of paint flat it down using 1800 grit wet and clean the wheel, then spray thin coats of lacquer onto it to acheive your shine. Make sure if you're using a rattle can of lacquer its warm before use.

I would leave about 15-20. You will know yourself when the layer has dried, and it won't take too long as the coats will be quite thin.

lacquer before spraypaint? never heard of that one before.

When ive been sanding down ive normally left about half an hour between each spray/sanding down session, depends where you are spraying it though, hot/cold

Yepp, the thing with painting is that you need eveyrthing to be perfect, otherwise it will just get worse and worse the more you do.... Take an afternoon out to do it, use high quality paints if you have to use rattle cans and remember that Halfords paint is shit.

what effect does putting lacquer on befor the paint? surely this would just be a waste of time as the lacquer is used to give extra protection and makes the paint shiney. i would of fought putting lacquer on before was wrong. needs to go on after.
