T-Mobile over the phone said if I was to cancel my contract they would give me a "PAK" code so i could keep my current number.
Went into the shop and said I would have to wait for the contract to run out, and If i cancelled it I wouldn't get my "PAK" code.
Just to clarify does anybody know if I would get to keep my number if I was to cancel the contract or not?

It's PAC not PAK
Porting Authority Code
If you wait for the contract to expire, the account will be closed. Hence why you wouldn't be ableto port your number from it
If you request your PAC it'll be valid for 30 days, you must port out within this date (the 30 days is equivilent to the 30 days you must give when cancelling an account notice)
So basically porting your number closes the account
As for what the shop said, ignore them. They'll only be wanting to sell you a new one once they know it's ran out
Ring them, when there's 30 days remaing on the contract & you'll have no bother, all you'll pay is the remainder (which you'd have to pay anyway)
If you've a few months left on the contract, you'd have to pay your remaining months line rental to them to get your PAC
Hope that helps, although I guess I've probably confused you even more

was advised that you can get your PAK or whatever it is and if you dont use it for 30 days nothing happens, if however you give over the code to another phone contract, they will cancel the contract and charge you for the remaining months.

you'd be better off buying another phone&number all together I think, ring t-mobile and ask them how much you'd have to pay to cancel your contract now.. but I think it will be a big sum.

definately not worth doing now, as willay said, you should do it in the last month of your contract end.
You'll have to pay the remainder of the months to cancel.
Codes expire after 30days, so you've only got 30 to do something about it.
