Sorry for all the newbie questions and all that, this place just seems to be the best place to rumble peoples knowledge without having to go the garage and pay a fortune after buying my first car!

At the moment my exhaust is blowing and I've located were its coming from. I've got a 4-1 protech maifold and a de-cat straight through exhaust. Were tha manifold connects to the exhaust pipe there seems to be 2 slits which I've been told is to make sure the exhaust fits in properly.

Its blowing from there, as Ive said before Im pretty skint to take it to a garage so I've bought an exhaust bandage from Halfords as a short term solution. I need to take the clamp off so I can but the bandage around but Im shit scared the thing will fall off or on to me haha.

What I'm trying to get to after a giant essay is how is the exahust properly held on, just these clamps? So if I take them off I can put them easily back on? And do you think I will just need to tighten the clamps to stop it rattling? I've heard about velcro tie wraps as wel so i might get them but dont know what to wrap them round other than the exhasut obviosuly.

Sorry for the massive essay but thanks for your help, appreciate it!

Hi mate, the exhaust wont fall on you once you take the clamp off as the part with the 2 slits is slightly larger than the rest of the exhaust so it sleeves over it, plus theres the fact the exhaust is on hangers where the rubbers attach.

I would take the two pieces of the exhaust off, smear exhaust paste around the smaller pipe (without the slits) and slide it into the sleeved part propperly and let it set. Hopefully it will stop the blowing.

As for the rattling, if its a corsa its most likely rattling no the rear beam or the exhaust heat shields are vibrating against it. Loosen the clamps and twist the backbox so the pipe has more area around the rear beam then tighten the brackets up. (you may want a friend to tighten while you hold the exhaust in its new position.

Also if you need to raise the exhaust up try using cable ties on the hangers and a bit of silver duct tape to keep the heat off, they worked fine for me on a 2.5" inch system on my xe corsa.

Thanks for the advice, think I'll do that over the weekend. I had some exhaust paste for a very small hole near the and did the job so got more or less a full tube to play with.

It's just so annoying going over small bumps and the exhaust is rattling and when its below 3500 revs it blows and sounds horrible and above 3500 it sounds chavvy. It's blowing quite a lot so no doubt it will probably using more petrol as well with were the position of the slits are.

BTW it's a 98 1.4 Corsa Sprt m8, only had it a few weeks and trying to sort it out as how I want it.

Again thanks for your help

cable ties. er no no. go down to your local di store and ask for a 2 inch diameter jubilee clip, piss easy to fit and wont make the knocking sound. (for £1.10 you cant go wrong)

Yep it certainly is. What did you do in the end to fix it?
