I think the usual way to deal with this problem is to grind out the old metal/rust and fibre glass it, smooth with filler then paint as normal

Doesnt sound like the way forwards as its a structual point on the car and takes quite a bit of stress i think.

sell car, then add price of what you're about to pay for a spray.... spend the money on a post 97 model = problem solved.
my 96 P sport had cracking pillars, so sold it and bought a 1.6 98 sport... no cracking pillars, woopy

my 1997 P had a crakked driverside pillar
The shell wont make any difference, your 1998 one was a newer car and probably had less miles on it?
weld them up and get it painted

That fault was fixed in 1997 when the metal plate mod was added to the new models.
Mine went on the XE, took it to a bodyshop and had a weld put on there for the time being.

ive had both sides welded on my gsi, had a piece welded 1 inch bigger all round then smoothed and painted. thats the propper way to do it. its also an mot failier as its to close to the seat belt harness. (thats why i had it done as it failed on the cracks) went to 3 different garages aswell

some after 97 still cracked
vauxhall do a b pillar repair kit which is basically some bond up the inside of the pillar and weld the front up.
my old 97 daily driver cracked them, i welded them up and a few years later they were back again.
best way is if no metal plate behind, make a little strengthener plate , drill holes in ur post and plug weld the plate in solid and weld up the cracks, smooth and paint..
