hi i done the system scanner thing from cruical, and its told me:

Q: Do I have to install matching pairs?

A: No.

No, you can install modules one at a time, and you can mix different densities of modules in your computer. But if your computer supports dual-channel memory configurations, you should install in identical pairs (preferably in kits) for optimal performance.

(my PC is not dual-channel supportive btw)

atm i have 2x 256Mb RAM, so can i simply swap one of those for a 1Gb chip and have the PC running 1280Mb? this would be better than going for 2x 512Mb as obviously it gives me more and i can just add another 1Gb in the future if needed. (btw currently using DDR PC3200, and the 1Gb chip would also be this speed... and it does say this chip is compatible with my system on the cruical site :cool

itll be this one...

you can mix different sizes and different speeds (although will only run at lowest speed rating IIRC).

But yeah, your probably best going for 1GB as will allow you to upgrade in the future without much hassle!
