i would have to say fiesta mainly because its a hatchback so should be lighter then the escort (i dont kno for sure) and s2 escorts are quite common, i have only seen one or two fiestas going around

what is your price range ?
one thing i learned when hunting these cars in the 1-4k price range is that you dont find many spottless bargins, i always hated how peeps wanted to sell old tat for high prices... last S2 i saw the fella wanted 4.6k the bay had been painted by brush with gloss paint weeping rust and peeling
luckly my S1 popped out of no where, i happily payed 6k... you get what you pay for at times but its not a car you use all year round at that

id go for an escort over a fiesta, finding a good one with no rot is a problem.
then finding one thats reliable is the next step!
avoid 5th injectors

I didn’t look twice at anything with engine mods.. just put doubts on it, but that’s just my personal preference

I'd go for a Fiesta in white or silver.

Id prefer a Fiesta personally. I wouldnt pay anything les than 3k though, and I wouldnt expect to buy the first one I saw because decent ones are hard to come by. You should spend alot of time lifting up carpets, checking the sills, floor pan, arches etc for rust.

Fiestas are terribly skittish and can be very unstable under hard braking from high speeds due to their narrow track, short wheelbase and lack of weight.
The Fiesta really isn't suited to being turbocharged.
If you want an S1 you'll need to be prepared to travel and you will have to pay at least 6k for a nice one. Expect to have a job on your hands finding one without a cracked dash (much like the two door Sierra Cosworths and XR4s)
S2s are more plentifull and due to being several years younger will be less likely to be rotten.
The S2 uses a different gearbox mount setup to the S1 and the mounts will be prone to tearing on high power/torque cars, so these will need to be upgraded to Vibratechnics items. Don't expect even those to last for ever though.
On standard cars, the benefit of the S2 over the S1 is that the later car has a water cooled turbo.
Check everywhere for rust but the worst offender is the battery tray, so remove the battery and check thoroughly.
Any high power variant of either model will get through gearboxes. Mine destroyed it's first one under warranty when it was six months old and bog standard.
My last gearbox build lasted about 3.5k miles before the bearings got noisy again.
Get registered on Passionford and keep an eye on the classifieds, also get RS owners club membership, because their club mag (Rallye News) will have the best cars for sale in the whole country advertised in the back in each issue.
Also, if there's an RSOC meet local enough to you, get down there for their monthly meetings as there will normally be cars for sale there and the standard is invariably eye poppingly good.

efi conversion on standalne management is a nice easy way forward!
as for gearboxes, well they are made of cheese, an uprated item to handle around 300bhp and 300lbft will cost £550+vat with a rebuilt standard diff.
the fiesta doesn't have a diff as standard where as the escort does.
having driven many of each type, s1, s2 and fiesta, id go for a s1 if i wanted someting to be original, a s2 if i wanted something to make fast. just not so keen on the fiestas as svm says when they get going they just dont feel right IMO

It is a contstant pressure system and as the name infers utilises electronics, a true mechanical fuel injection system such as a Kugelfischer setup is far more complex and expensive and does not
