I was speaking to a guy at work today who used to own an xe corsa, he sang its praises for its straight line power but he was telling me how he could never get his to handle right! He even went on to say how he'd wished he kept the std gsi lump in there and spent money on that!

So then what they actually like as ive booked a week off work to do a conversion, was settled on an xe but now im in 2 minds whether to or not?

mine likes to dip like hell on very tight corners when pegging it. No understeer mind.
I just need a strut brace really
Apart from that handles well

from going 1.6 to 2.0 you notice the extra weight but ive never seen at as being too bad in corners.

And after being in willays i would say they can handle!

So what sort of suspension setup would be best suited to an xe, I mean the mo i have, well what i think are spax shocks and spax 40mm springs, fine in my 1.2, but useless with an xe?

i have 1.6 spax shocks and springs.

bit floaty on bumps but fine round corners. quite a comfy ride tbh when driving normally!

You got to love that guy down the pub that tells you they cant handle yet has never driven one, or has any idea how ot build a car.

If its built by a tool then it'll drive crap if its built right then it will go round corners simple as really.

Really annoys me how this myth has got around which has no doubt come from people running thiers on 40mm g-max springs an wondering why it doesnt handle, which to there is a hell of a lot of with people still building them like that.

And before anyone meantion oh I dont have money to spend on suspension an brakes blah blah, to get any nova / corsa to handle good you need to spend money on suspension an brakes period. Be it 45bhp 1lt or a 6 million bhp let.

it will handle ok if the cash is spent on the right suspension setup. most people dont though. expect to spend £700+ on getting it to handle well.

it spreads out the movement between the sides of the suspsension hence the antiroll effect it has. But on a car with uprated / stiffer suspension its just dead weight.

Front that is.

i can agree with the g-max lol i had that when my conversion was first done but was only for trip home b4 it got changed.

after i changed it for coilovers it handled quite well in my opinion, but then again i love the understeer and the driver input an xe corsa takes, to me dont matter if u lose to certain car on twisty road as long as im having fun which is what its all about and my xe is fun to drive fact.

lets just say one of my friends has a civic type r and one has puma 1.7 and one has a clio 182 and although each loves there car they all say how my xe is a fun car to drive and thats all that matters FUN

hoping my xe will be very good soon with its bilstein/irmy suspension/polybushes/whiteline rear arb/3 strut braces and all major steering suspension repaced for new as well as some good 4-pots which should add performance straight away.

so my conclusion is i love my xe ITS FUN

Well that blows that myth! lol

Also blows my spax suspension outta the water aswell!

So what do we think with say spending about £300 on suspension, mainly as its all ive got to spend for that part, I love my budgets i do! lol
