whats the best way of doing this? tried hairdryer and it softens the sealant but still feels very hard to remove.

not putting in the oven.

i'm not using the oven incase it melts my plastic headlight. thought that would be obvious?

You do it in the oven. A hairdryer is hardly going to do shit.

Pretty obvious really? Don't put the temerature up high enough to melt the plastic. You do that by starting at maybe 50 degrees and going hotter until you can get the sealent apart. Don't just stick it in at 250 degrees.

think i'll just stick to buying a new headlight if it's going to be hard

Well if you think about how hot the air is coming out of the hair dryer, then you can roughly guess what temperature to start with in the oven can't you? You know that the hair dryer didn't melt the plastic.

As a guide, ABS has a melting point of around 105 degrees celsius so don't go too high. I don't know what the covers for headlights are made of, though.
The oven's the way to do it though, just don't go mad. If you're buying a new unit anyway, might as well give it a shot.

i'll try tomorrow after work, as if i do it tonight and fuck up, there's no way i'll be going to work at 5:45am tomorrow
