I brought my projector over from uni to my mums place for xmas, and she bought a portable screen off ebay for £70, spent most of xmas watching films in HD that I downloaded in Spain. My mum didnt see the point of a projector before, but i think ive convinced her to get one when she retires (doesnt have time to watch many films at the moment cos she works too many hours). Just put a pic up to show the difference in size between an 80" screen (projected from about 3m away) and the 40" plasma behind. If anyone is thinkng about investing in a HD projector, all i can say is do it. Best gadget I ever bought

a decent projector is quite expensive though and you have to have the space/conditions to use it. Thats why pubs normally have them. Looks good though but isnt as always as good/practical as a flatscreen TV

Yeah ideally a flatscreen tv for the main viewing, but then a projector for watching films at night. You really do need a dark room to make the most of them.

if you can afford the setup on top of a daily flatscreen setup then it's worth it - but it's a pretty expensive route to go down, especially the projector and screen, as well as the accessories like brackets and blackout curtains.
And you can pick up a bloody good 50" plasma (pioneer etc) for the price of a decent projector.

pretty expensive - semi-decent projector (DLP/LCD) is around 800-2000. Go down RGB CRT route, then you're looking around the 2k-10k+ mark.
certainly isn't cheap
