Place of work (a school) had a gas leak last night and just wondering what the health and safety law is for this? Was told by my boss that it was my choice whether i went in today (and i didn't), but it seems that it has miffed a few people upstairs

cheers all

it was a test from your boss, to see if you were a good dedicated worker, if you went in you'd be safe. The people who didn't go in usually get sacked a few weeks later, happened to me

The H&S law won't cover whether you have to return to work the next day it's safe or not, but it will cover that the employer had to make it safe before you did.
A gas leak is reportable under RIDDOR, but I don't think that affects your return.

If they'd had it verified by a competent person that it was safe, there was no reason for you to not return and anything that happens as a result would be out of H&S law.

if he said you could have the day off and you did its him thats wrong if you werent meant to and if it was him testing you, no job is woprth risking your life for, espically if there had been gas still present
