I'm getting Wireless broadband at home. should my year old PC already be set up to deal with wireless or do I have to buy some sort of USB adapter or something?
Excuse me for being thick but I know sod all about computers!

if its a desktop computer its more likley your gonna need a wireless adaptor either a usb or pci.

start > control panel > system > hardware > device manager > network adaptors.
Post a screen shot of that section and we will tell you if you have one

Does it honestly sound like he built it himself? 
jackso - you need a wireless usb adapter for it to work, what you posted there means it came with wired support, which is fine if the router is next to your PC but not if its in the next room

pci or usb will be fine, personally i find the pci ones more reliable

True Steve, as do I, by reliable do you mean best? We had a PCI wiress antenna and it got a poor signal because couldnt move it around very much, got a USB stick with a 3m extention and the signal strength is much much higher. And touch wood, my USB one has never played up actually
