the way i do it is

1)get all wiring and pipes out the way
2)remove timing belt and exhaust manifold etc
3)take the head off
4)remove inlet manifold and starter/loom
5)take cluctch inspection plate off and undo the clutch bolts
6)lift block out.

i have to do it like that as the engine cant come out from above with the inlet on and there is no clearance to get it off.and i'm lazy and can't be arsed taking the box/shafts out.

* Slacken wheel bolts.
* Jack car up and support on axle stands.
* Undo fuel lines (17 & 19mm IIRC?)
* Undo clutch/throttle cable.
* Undo speedo cable.
* Undo heater matrix pipes.
* Disconnect rad pipes.
* Undo loom and pull through bulkhead.
* Undo battery terminals including earth to shell.
* Remove front wheels.
* Pull the split pins from the end of the shafts.
* Undo the 2 x 30mm castle nuts.
* Undo the two vertical bolts (per side) that pass through the bottom arms/tie bars/balljoints. You can then pull the hub out to release the outer CV from the hub. Grab the shafts and give them a sharp pull to remove from the gearbox (may want a container underneath to catch the transmission fluid)
* Undo the 3 vertical bolts that go into the front cross member (15mm socket IIRC?)
* Support engine using eyelets on the head with a crane (or some creative stuff? :lol
* Undo the gearbox mount, off side mount and rear mount.
* Drop out of the bottom.
* Get car higher and drag engine out.
* Refit in reverse order.

I may have missed a tiny thing but thats basically it, I can have an XE out in under an hour on my own.

right so the reason i took it out was because the piston rings are shagged

and buy oversized pistons from vauxhall them self yeah?

don't want to buy another block cause could be buying someone else prob

if its just rings id pull the pistons hone the bores (after checking them of course)clean up ur piston grooves useing an old bit of ring then refit new rings with a bit of oil pop ur pistons back in then build it all up, ul need top and bottom end gasket kit for this job , stick ur lump back in connect it up fill it with oil disconnect ur ht leads turn it over get oil presssure up connect ht's fire it up, go down tesco get some proper good cleaner back home clean up all the old oil an shit before ur mum slaps you (past experience) jobs a good un! well thats a rough idea anyway!

you should really at least pop the head off and send a piston or 2 down to bdc and run your finger down the bore have a quick visual check. get a new set of rings and use a compression ring in the bore check the gap with a feeler guage at various places up and down the bore. dont right your bores of yet ive had engines with 150000 on them with near perfect bores. save you a bit of money!
