stavs thread has made me think what would you look for?

theres two cars on the market both are the same n/a powered car..

one has 80,000 on the clock with Full service history..

the other has 50,000 on the clock but no real history only a couple of receipts.

both are similarly priced..

which one would you go look at first?

the higher miler with the history, low milage with no history screams out that its been clocked.

when we stamp peoples service books I always look through them. I often find that the milage is a bit iffy.

one customer we did an exhaust for on a golf had a sevice at the same time, we noted the milage in the book as 110k+ miles, it had a glovebox full of history. The same car came back to us a few months later for more work, I noticed that the milage was now less than 50k, asked the customer and he said he recieved no history with it.

if you had a car you had taken care of, looked after, maintained properly you would be proud of the history so its one of 4 things:

badly looked after car
a bit dodgy and the history was conveniently 'lost'
a genuine car with the history genuinely lost
a reposession where the car was taken without the history and it was never recieved from the previous owner.

With my corsa I serviced it myself and fitted new parts myself or got a mate to do them. Therefore no service history as I didnt want to put it to the garage for a service so I could pay £100 odd for a bit of paper. Forgot to keep my receipts though for the parts

High miler with history all the way.

Low mileage means nothing with no history to back it up.

As with alot of things, poeple make a point when telling you about there car that its "proper low mileage" so I think its a bit a bragging point for some people

High miler with history without a doubt, unless of course the low miler was exceptional condition.

Depends what the car is.

I've been looking at S2000s recently - high mileage definately isn't a problem on them, FSH is definately required, wouldn't consider a car without one.

If I was just buying something cheap to run about in on the cheap I'd probably not care.

If it was me it would go through a 1001 point stav check so millage would not be an issue on a standard car, in my thread i had doubts on the astra after he said it had a dump valve and power-pipe = not standard = no swap

definately the FSH

if its got that the mileage could be proven and judged on how much the car has been driven. should be on MOTs and mayb recorded on service book (should be) so you can see where all of those 80k miles have gone

50 can with little info could be gentle 4k a year then thrashed in the final 18months with all the miles....

FSH.

Having said that, I wouldn't buy a high miler with FSH if it was my everyday car and I had to rely on it. Could end up causing hassle.

Depends on the cars usuage I guess - but still, I wouldn't touch a car without FSH regardless.

A high miler but a good service history cancels each other out really. Depending what kind of high mileage I guess. Although modern engines can last a fair amount of miles.
