It wasn't a gift, it was payment for something he didn't end up buying.
Sale is void, so the payment shouldn't ever not be returned.

Ians right, if you buy something in a shop and return it do you not expect all your money back.

anyway, since he called me a cunt no contact has been made. im willing to pay most of back, bit by bit, but only if he apologies for calling me that! if not, then im not just gonna make the effort to come up with the money. the balls in his court

id say,
set him straight about insultin you for starters, and was wrong for lettin you keep the money (i.e. GAVE it to you) even though you offered it back and that its pretty bloody cheeky askin for it now this far down the line. if i was him i wouldnt have expected it to still be there, wouldnt ask for it back if i said you can keep it, probably would have forgotten about it a year down the line too lol......but i wouldnt say yea just keep the 500 quid in the first place.
but, seein as it is only 400 odd quid left after the drinks n that? it probably will be easier to just arrange a payment plan over time and not mess with the friendship too much.
imo.
