Idea sounds great there, just thinking that may be quite hard to program in?

imo makes perfect sense. but i've no idea how it works, its all a different langauge to me. i'm sure it would just be a modification of moderators rights, just restricted to the one thread.
like Ian i think its a massive shame the function has gone from CO and if it went from PO as well it would ruin all the +ves of being able to post just because of the small group of people that want to post unnecessarily

iv had this problem with a certain member in one of my threads recently. And my mate had the same problem with the same guy a couple of days later.
It is really annoying and really can ruin a thread...but i think that constructive input into a thread can be useful, and often get the sale moving a bit quicker.

Totally Agree...

And as a Mod of Classifieds it is almost impossible to enforce the rules unless the posts get reported..I can't read every thread....

you can not give the seller moderation rights as they could also moderate their thread to suit them when a sale goes bad, or if that person is ripping people off.

Either stop replies in those threads or just ban anyone that does it straight away (which I know you have been doing).

We did it on AOC a few years back on the cars for sale and it does help (although we do get constant emails asking why they can not post in threads!! - people dont like reading rules).

1) that is a risk what ever the situation, there is clear indication on the Classfied front page warning of the risk of buying so would be no different to being able to post, not being able to post or have the thread self moderated!!

if a known seller or product is "riping someone off" then why not highlight this to a moderator?? that is why they are there!

my suggestion is for self moderation is only to allow removal of unwanted "spam" posts not editting rights. if a post is making it clear that the item is a "rip off" that poster should also/instead inform a Mod.

tbh there is no sure fire way of buying anything with security guaranteed. whether that be from Classified on CS, using any other internet based purchase or even on the high street (my tomatoes are going mouldy already and i got them from Tesco on Tues )

there is risk assosciated with everything we purchase what level of risk we chose to accept differs. but imo my suggestion is the best of both but does not remove any risk

Exactly! the key reason YOU NEED responses on for sale adverts is that the poor bastard selling the thing will constantly get people asking similar things all the time... plus it's hard for people interested in buying to guage how many people are interested and what other people's offers have been previously.

I disagree, allow the original poster to edit his post and disable replys, if he/she does recieve a lot of questions via u2u (i.e "will it fit a *whatever* model") then all they have to do is edit their post to state whether it does or doesn't fit those models - or whatever the question is.
It really is the best option imo and will remove the idiots that ruin it with unwanted comments and critisismsmsmsmsm.

I agree with the idea that it should be left as it is and then if someone starts making negative/snidey comments, you can report them and they're banned!

Remember than in many posts, the comments are positive and do help the seller. Its a small minority ruining it, in a minority of posts.

Jules - it wont work and it opens up Ian and the team to all sorts of issues.

Allowing the thread starter the right to remove posts means they can abuse it if a sale goes bad or in fact if they want to rip some one off.

The report button is a useful tool and its the best way to stop this situation.
