I have a boost gauge with 3 wires for illumination.

It needs to be on with ignition.

Theres 3 wires, batt +, batt -, earth.

Could I solder the + & - together, and join them to a single live behind the CD player, and the earth obviously.

Sounds a bit wrong to me...

Should be:

+12v
-12v (Ground)
Switched illumination.

Connect the 12v to a live or ignition live, ground to ground and illumination to the illumination feed on the headunit.
