I'd personally rather an xe for the track, and the money left over can buy fibreglass panels and polly carb windows

XE + Track, on paper sounds cheap and probably a good idea but in no way do people exagerate when they say an xe wont handle, the extra weight isnt worth it in my opinion. If I were to start again id do everything the same over. 106 + light 1.6 8v, stripped out, LSD, - the result is as quick as my brothers 2.0 zetec fiesta and far superior in corners. Ive no doubt my majorly underpowered 106 will be superior to an xe corsa on track. Its surprising how these factors become so much more apparent when you are constantly flat out on track, its nothing you can judge on the road by any means.

Is there a massive difference in weight between the 1.6 8v and 1.6 16v engines in the 106's?
I think my choice would be a £1000-1500 106 Gti, a new set of semi-slick tyres all round for the 14"s, some adjustable dampers, beef up the brakes, and send it on a diet. It wouldn't be the best car, but i', sure it'd have a hell of a lot of potential.

yeh Butler, I think you'll beat a lot of cars around combe.
problem with whacking semi slicks on rob is that it'd over load the standard suspension...
I think buy gti, strip it completely, exhaust + filter only... then decent suspension, 15" 195 wheels with fairly good normal tyres.

butler you're making me want to put a cage in my car. Love the track prepped feel inside your car. I did not like the lack of working passenger seat belt

Even with something like Toyo R888's?
I've came up with another idea anyhow. It involves a Fiat Cinqucento, a trip to machine mart to buy an angle grinder and a Mig welder, some glorified scaffolding tubing, and the most powerful bike engine you can get your hands on with what's left of the budget . Scrap heap challange eat your heart out ..

888s are semi slicks lol. I have taken some more recent pics with my SLR actually, visually though nothing at all I think has changed since I got the car back in July. There will be plenty of work carried out over the next few weeks which will definately warrant pics once its done.
Paul did you enjoy the grab handle hanging off, rattling and squeaking exhaust, loose gearknob, buggered engine mounts? lol! I do agree with you Paul GTI is a good base, I know that personally I could never go back to a 106 without an LSD now though, would always be craving more grip on corners.

yeh butler this is the problem I have now... I saw that silver saxo on the previous page, stripped out and caged etc with cams...
I thought hmm, maybe I should just buy that, and use it as track slag... but then I'd need to give it my LSD! and I don't want to not have a LSD on my car.
Plus I'd prefere to have a 106, than saxo.
On the other hand, I don't think I can bring myself to mutilate my poor 106 ripping it apart to fit a cage ... so i'm at a bit of a dilema moment.

plus, I plan on going travelling in a few months (july onwards) for a few months (get back novemberish onwards)...
So I kinda feel, whats the point in 2nd car at the mo... though obviously don't want to wait till 2009 and another birthday before I do what i want.
I'm always walking along looking for something to realistically replace the car I have, looking at cars that pass me on the street picturing them being stripped, caged and sorted lol.
For the budget and requirements I have I can't find anything at the mo.
I may go RWD with a different car in 2009? dunno tho.

Body –
Very clean shell no with one 2-3 spots of small rust (5mm), I am in the middle of repairing the B Pillars where they are rusty and cracked an painting both rear 1/4 panels then re buffing the full car to bring the paint work back up to factory shine.
Car has just been under sealed.
All Jacking covers are on the car still.
Battery has been relocated to the boot.
Suspension, Brakes and wheels -
Bilstein suspension (yellows top spec made for a 2lt 16 corsa)
Astra GSi 256mm Brake setup with brand new disc and pads
15” Black Cavalier GSi Wheels (just painted and refurbed)
The suspension is a very good setup which is for a 2lt 16v corsa. It has the correct weighting etc for the extra weight of the engine.
This isn’t a cheap setup this is very high good prob one of the best around for a 2lt 16v corsa. I have a bill (somewhere) for £750 from when they where new just 3 months ago. If your bothered about how low you car is this isn’t the setup for you, if you are bothered how your car handles on a track this is perfect.
For anyone who wants a fast road car/track car this is a perfect starting point a lot of the hard work is done and money spent in the right places. This will be a very good all around car.
I am for £2600, I am willing to move on price BUT car will have to be at a lower spec, message me for any details.
