Looks to me that most people that have owned a 1600 and a 20XE favour the 20XE...
I don't know anyone who has converted to an XE and then wanted to go back the 1600.
I'd say thats your answer

I have also owned both, and I'd say XE every time. You don't realise how much quicker it is The difference really shows 60+.

Indeed, my clio has vvt and dosnt get going till 5k, most modern 16v engines are like this.
Also never really liked the engine in my corsa (had a gsi and 1.6 sport)
XE's pull hard to the red line where as small blokes feel like your revving them for the sake of it without really getting anywhere. Ok ITB's and cams etc help but pound for pound on a road car i recon xe without a doubt
