tip for anyone whos attemps to do this via the cd players wires,NEVER USE INSULATION TAPE AFTER JOINING THE WIRES TOGETHER.

i did this and almost set my car on fire when the tape slipped off the wires and made contact with the cd player causeing the wires to fry so now iv gotta go buy another lead for my cd player £20 and attempt it again but i will use terminal blocks instead of the tape which i know i should of used in the 1st place.

but on the bright side it did work before this all happend so now i know it does work and i will use terminal blocks tomorrow

if your not confident with wiring i wouldnt be cutting anything full stop ideally you want to be soldering them and then covering with heat shrink but insulating tape should be fine if you put it on right.

The best thing if you dont have a soldering iron are heat shrinkable connectors. I use them all the time at work, they last for years.

i did put the tape on right, was wrapped nice and tight but came away when pushing the cd player back in as there is not much room behind the cd player.

Get a bulb with a couple of bits of wire, touch one end to an earth somewhere/body and the other to random wires till you find an ignition live.

I'd spend a fiver buying a multimeter and do it that way though.

If you had a bulb and 2 wires the bulb would light up when you had one end touched to earth and the other to 12v.

A multimeter would achieve the same outcome.

It may be better to get somebody who knows what they are doing though as you don't want to cause any problems.
