Is powdercoating really that much stronger than paint? I understand that its better at resisting chips, hence why underbody parts are powdercoated, but how well does it hold up to a little bit of kerbing?

Its not very often I kerb mine, but I clipped the current ones a few months back but as I painted them I can easily touch them up. If powdercoated wheels contact a kerb, do they chip easily? As I know it can't just be touched up with paint.

Cheers

Think painted or powdercoated if you brush against the kerb your gonna get just about the same damage..

Misses brushed a kerb the first time i got my wheels powdercoated in white, cant say it was less damaged tbh

powder coating is far better than paint for alloys, definitely stronger and more durable

But does it stand up to kissing a kerb Dave? As there would never really be another situation in which a wheel could chip etc.

If not, I'll paint them myself for about £20, rather than paying £40 a wheel to be done.

That was a guess, if its going to cost more, paint it is! I've painted my last two sets and they have been fine, just I marked the current set on a kerb.

Time to paint then!

well, if I had to put money on which finish would stand up better to a kerb I would betr on the powdercoating every time. it definitely withstands scrapes better and it has a much thicker finish so wont go through to the metal as easily. also its far more resiliant to brake dust.

I know it would be better, but if it will still mark, I'll paint as I can touch up my painting.

Also, with powdercoating - would they also be able to powdercoat the plastic centrecaps the same colour?
